In 1987, workmen found a small underground chamber on Jacob’s Well Road with a Hebrew character carved into the wall. It was at first believed to be a mikveh bath, but has since been found to be a bet tohorah, a ritual bath used for burial rites. A Jewish medieval cemetery existed opposite where Queen Elizabeth's Hospital in Brandon Hill Park now is.
