Special Class for 'Deficient Children', Castle School, Castle Green (1897 – 1902)

In 1897 classes for ‘Deficient Children’ were begun within the school that then housed the Castle Deaf Classes. Although it is not proven, it seems likely that the Special Classes included partially hearing children whose hearing was not regarded as totally lost and requiring educating as if they were deaf, or who were mistakenly diagnosed as ‘mentally deficient’ due to their hearing difficulties.
