The Shah Jalal Jame Mosque is the only purpose-built mosque of its kind in the South West of England. Before the mosque was constructed, the Bangladeshi Association of Bristol held prayers in the Bangladesh Centre. Building for the mosque began in 2000 after the Bangladeshi Association bought two derelict shopson Stapleton Road for demolishment. The mosque standing today has a small dome and four minarets, and a capacity of eight hundred people. The Bangladeshi Association was formed in 1971 to help the Bangladeshi community, who, according to the Home Office in 1986, were amongst the most deprived communities in the United Kingdom.
