Across the bike path (the former Bristol-Bath railway line) a large recreational ground was created for the workforce of the Packer's Chocolate Factory. By the late 1920s, the area provided a cricket ground, tennis courts, a swimming bath and a bowling green. The field was used by cricket teams, but also by the girls’ hockey club and Packer's own football team. From 1921 onwards, the company hosted an annual sports day for the employees and their families there. At the southern end of the complex, the imposing Bruce Cole Institute provided a space for a wide range of activities, such as dances, concerts or even gymnastics classes for the employees.
